Job Description
Job Title: Group Counselor or Activity Counselor
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum age 19 and completed at least one year of college or one year of work experience.
- Currently certified in CPR and First Aid. Acceptable certifications: American Red Cross C.P.R. for adults, children, and infants, American Red Cross Basic First Aid, or American Heart Association Community C.P.R.
- Excellent role model for children. High moral standards, including no alcohol, drugs, smoking, or inappropriate language. Outstanding character and integrity.
- Neat and professional appearance: No tattoos, body piercings, earrings on men, unconventional hair color or style.
- Desire, commitment, and ability to work with young people.
- Enthusiasm for the outdoors and the program Gold Arrow Camp offers.
- Compatibility with camp philosophy and mission.
- Leadership and supervision skills.
- Concern for safety and well-being of others.
- Positive attitude and outlook.
- Ability to communicate and work with children ages 6-14 and provide necessary instruction.
- Ability to seek and accept supervision and guidance.
- Accepting of diversity in religions, ethnicity, culture, and race. Able to treat all campers and staff fairly.
- Willing to take alcohol and/or drug tests on request of employer.
- Agree to a criminal background check.
Additional Qualifications:
(Activity Counselors only)
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or equivalent) for all activity counselors of water activities.
- Certification or sufficient experience and knowledge in activity to safely teach campers (all activity counselors).
General Responsibilities:
- To identify and meet campers' needs. "A counselor must be, at different times, a teacher, a parent, a brother or sister, and a best friend."
Specific Responsibilities:
- Supervise cabin group throughout the day, including wake up, cabin clean-up, meals, rest hour, showers, activities, bedtime, etc. Know location and activity of each camper at all times.
- Provide a safe environment for campers and self.
- Act as a positive role model for campers.
- Get to know each camper, including their likes and dislikes.
- Nurture each camper's development of social skills and self-esteem.
- Supervise and monitor each camper's health and hygiene.
- Communicate with Head Counselor regularly.
- Follow through with all required paperwork, including weekly cabin reports and personal notes to parents.
- Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group.
- Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
- Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.
- Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
- Help campers plan their participation in campfires and special events.
- Assist in teaching or leading an activity, as assigned.
- Carry out other duties as designated.
Additional Specific Responsibilities:
(Activity Counselors only)
- Instruct and guide cabin groups and individual campers to successfully participate in designated activity.
- Use humor and patience in teaching to bring out the best in participants.
- Enforce camp safety regulations, including distribution of necessary safety equipment in appropriate sizes.
- Develop and carry out lesson plans for different age groups and skill levels.
- Instruct campers in emergency procedures.
- Maintain equipment in good working order.
- Supervise campers participating in activity at all times.
- Report all lost or broken equipment.
Essential Functions:
- Must possess strength and endurance required (at 7000 feet altitude) to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques as trained by camp.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities. Able to assist campers in an emergency (Fire, evacuation, illness, or injury). Able to follow, observe, and enforce all camp safety regulations.
